On Saturday, Twitter permanently suspended one of the accounts linked to the Iranian supreme leader for calling for revenge against former US president Donald Trump over the assassination of a top general.
In a statement to news agency, a Twitter spokesperson said, "The account in question has been permanently suspended for violating our policy regarding ban evasion." This week, the account @KhameneiSite posted an animated video of a drone shooting at Trump, who ordered the drone strike in Baghdad two years ago that killed the top Iranian commander, General Qassem Soleimani.
There are active accounts in various languages for the leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Twitter suspended another account similar to this one last year over a post that appeared to refer to revenge against Trump.
Khamenei's official website also published the video titled "Revenge is Definite". Twitter places a great deal of emphasis on keeping people safe and safeguarding the health of the platform. The social media giant says it has clear policies for dealing with abusive behaviour and will take action when violations are detected.
Soleimani architected Iran's Middle East strategy as head of the Revolutionary Guards' foreign operation arm, the Quds Force. On January 3, 2020, a US drone strike killed him and his Iraqi lieutenant near Baghdad airport.
The statement said, “Soleimani’s murderer and the one who gave the order will pay the price,” appears as part of the video, which also shows an image of the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerualem. Trump ordered the assassination of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, leader of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in January 2020 when a US drone bombed his convoy at Baghdad International Airport.
Iran earlier this month observed a week of memorial events on the second anniversary of Soleimani’s death, ending with an exhibition of Iran’s missile capabilities. Khamenei has repeatedly promised to avenge Soleimani’s death.
The supreme leader and ultraconservative President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, threatened the US with revenge on January 3, the second anniversary of the strike. The Republican billionaire's supporters regularly denounce his Twitter ban, noting that several other leaders who are viewed as authoritarian by the United States can post on the platform.
