The coming Lok Sabha election in India is like a marathon where only one person is running by himself, and all the others are planning to finish the race by relay. Welcome to the biggest democracy in the world, where every loop hole is made bigger and deeper by the election.
The winner of this race in May will set the path for India, either of being among the top 5 economies of the world or back into the dark ages of corruption where it came from. This decision will not be based on merit but on the votes of the people. A dangerous situation to the say the least, because not everyone in a democratic election plays by the rules and not everyone who does, wins.
The way our politicians are trying to prove themselves worthy of votes in front of the world can easily embarrass any self-respecting individual. Be it the same old and we-know-it’s-fake photo ops of Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra with the poor, Rahul Gandhi’s unending list of lies, media’s continued bias, the queen like behavior of Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal, the cruel governance in Kerala by the CPI(M) or supposedly the MOAB the Mahagathbandhan.
All this drama just to win an election against one man, Narendra Damodardas Modi. Never in the history of Indian Politics since Independence has there been such hatred spewed from all directions for a politician. What wrong could he have done, or more importantly what things did he do right to rattle the establishment? One would think he must be of the likes of Hitler or Mussolini or Stalin or Mao if one were to believe what these folks were saying. Indeed, baseless character assassination and irrelevant reference to context are used as counter arguments quite freely now-a-days. But what can one do, media trials are considered above the decisions of the supreme courts of law specially by the educated class.
“No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…’” said Winston Churchill. Not that I am a fan of Churchill but the man’s got a point.
I am not trying to discard democracy as a form of governance, in fact if it weren’t for it, we would have never had a Prime Minister who was once a tea-seller. As much proud as I am of having a democratic government, the process worries me in the same amount.
Democracy is demanding, it requires equal and sincere participation of all the citizens at all the levels of governance. But since the rise of entertainment media, we have been made to believe that people have no power over the system and the politicians are the worst people on earth. Plus, it’s so uncool to talk about your social responsibilities, right?
The print and TV media which is considered one of the pillars of a democratic society, wearing a badge of neutrality and freedom of expression, is no less responsible in shaping up the perceptions of people. The politicians with power have long been taking advantage of this. Thankfully with the rise of internet and social media the lies spread by the print media are busted left and right.
It will not be completely wrong to say that worst politicians acquire more power because the best part of the people do not vote nor have any inclination towards nation building. It’s actually just simple math, the lesser the percentage of voting and lesser the number of people who are publicly active, the more the chances of a not-so-worthy candidate getting elected.
Just like it takes an effort to not order a take-out and prepare your own fresh healthy meal, it also takes effort to not blindly believe the opinions which come to your doorstep every morning.
Democracy is strong as long as people of the country are strong willed and well-informed. For now, it is the best form of governance and we are lucky to be living in it. Let us prove it to the world by electing that person whose aim is not just to win an election to gain power but to put India back in the top ranks of the world.
Jai Hind.
