In a significant development the Democrats have won the House of Representatives from the Republican Party by winning more than 220 seats at the time of filing this report. They have flipped seats which were previously held by GOP in the previous elections. On the other hand the Republicans retained the Senate pulling a surprise in many states including Florida. They have 51 seats so far, with 4 more still being counted.
The Republicans also won several of the gubernatorial elections in many states surpassing expectations of the pollsters. There were rumors of a democratic wave across the country. There was no wave but a strong sentiment definitely prevailed in the house races.
There were also a few surprises in the individual senate races like Florida where the Republicans wrested the seat back from the democrats, in Texas where after a long time the democrats gave a huge fight to the republicans, and in Tennessee and Indiana among others.
Overall it was a day where the democrats came out marginally ahead but both parties might be happy with this result. The GOP might be relieved that this was not a washout like they expected and the Dems might be relieved that they now have a foot in the door.
Many believe that this is also a step which will reign in President Trump and that he may be forced to climb down from his positions that he has taken in the last two years. How this pans out remains to be seen in the next year.
