An experimental geothermal power project is being set up by Singareni Collieries Company Limited at Pagideru village in Bhadradri district. Geothermal power plants such as this are first in the country, reports the coal mining company.
It will be built by the state-owned Singareni with the help of the Department of Science and Technology of the Union Ministry of Coal. A meeting with the representatives of Sriram Institute of Industrial Research was convened by Singareni Collieries' chairman and managing director N Sridhar. The schedule for the project's completion is March 2022.
A drilling task carried out by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Singareni authorities in the Manuguru region turned up hot steam wells. Management at Singareni has proposed tapping geothermal energy from hot steams in the region to the Union Coal Ministry. Following the approval by the Union Ministry, a loan in the amount of 1.72 crores has been approved for executing the geothermal plant to generate 20 KW of power.
Power could be generated from the hot steams traveling from the depth of about 1,000 meters, located on a 3,000 square yard plot. Upon completion of the proposed plant, power generation will begin by March 2022.
A number of villager farmers used the water to do agricultural work, wash their clothes and do other activities. It will still be possible for the locals to use the recycled water for their requirements after the geothermal power project has been completed.
Sridhar said that the completion of the pilot geothermal power project in Manuguru region would help the government to take up similar projects throughout the country wherever there were hot water steams. In addition to visiting the site, the authorities conducted the necessary studies in order to execute the project.
After commencement of the plant, Geo-thermal energy/power is available 24X7 throughout the year and will be connected to the grid at the nearest location for cross usage as per the demand.
Singareni is a village located in Khammam District, Telangana, India. Coal reserves in Telangana were found first in Singareni. Coal mines and all the infrastructure they require are known as coaleries, and the coaleries at Singareni are known as Singareni Collieries. The Singareni Collieries Company was named after it. However, after Hyderabad state was merged into India, the name of the town was changed to Yellandu and the Singareni Collieries railway station was neglected.
