Ever since Nawaz Sharif government has been unsuccessful in Modi bashing on the international platforms, Pakistanis are trying all crooked means to get their ever-blurry Kashmir agenda in the forefront. The latest strategy is the case of Kulbhushan Jadav, an ex-Indian naval officer who has been 'framed' by Pakistan as a RAW agent. Death sentence has been announced, he has been held guilty of involvement in espionage and sabotage activities in Pakistan. As of yet no correspondence has been established with Kulbhushan Jadav, who is languishing in a Pakistan jail. The whole incident has yet again highlighted the plight of the kangaroo military courts in Pakistan where transparency and clarity are impossible to find and is infested with rampant corruption and biased judiciary. Seeking justice, a PIL has been filed in Delhi HC seeking International Court of Justice (ICJ) intervention, calling for Kulbhushan Jadav's immediate release from Pakistan Jail. Although the Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj is making no stone unturned, it isn't clear how Kulbhushan Jadav is at the moment and whether he has already faced torture in Pakistani Jail.
As far as the claims of Pakistani Army are concerned, Kulbhushan Jadav was arrested during a raid near Chaman in Balochistan, a bordering town on March 24 last year. Pakistani Government has also released a six minute video where Kulbhushan Jadav is shown confessing that he worked for RAW and also, he is still working with the Indian Navy. As of now, it is not clear whether the video has been doctored or Kulbhushan Jadav has been tortured to confess such in front of the camera. Interestingly, Pakistani Army has ruled out consular access to Kulbhushan Jadav, which is also absolutely against internationally accepted behavior, especially in case of a death row convict.
MEA official spokesperson Gopal Baglay mentioned in the media, "Kulbhushan Jadav is a kidnapped innocent Indian, who is a retired officer of the Indian Navy. And these two facts were communicated to Pakistan one year ago when the matter of his illegal custody came to our knowledge. We had made 13 requests for the consular access, but it was denied by the Pakistan," The central government has taken a pro-active stance in this regard. Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre remarked, "We have given a strong message to authorities in Pakistan that the way in which the verdict has been given by the army court, is not transparent and not in accordance with bilateral relations between the two nations, If this verdict is implemented, we will consider it as murder of an Indian national. In any case, we will not tolerate this."
There are some interesting points which are of immediate importance to the present context. First and foremost, the Pakistani authorities are categorically stating that Kulbhushan Jadav joined RAW after 2011 Parliamentary attacks and his alleged role in Balochistan. In other words, Pakistan is trying to rephrase statements, highlighting India's alleged involvement in Balochistan where anarchy has been the rule of the day. The reluctance of the United Nations in introspecting the farcical trial of Kulbhushan Jadav has been the most shocking and needless to say, the present NDA government is moving ahead with diplomatic initiative to rescue the ex-naval officer. Seasoned diplomats are of the opinion that Pakistani forces are trying distract from their internal issues with regard to the growing influence of TTP, Panama Paper leak. Also, in all probability, the ever-growing tension between the military authority and elected Nawaz Sharif has reached its nadir. At such a juncture of time, the Kulbhushan Jadav death row has already gained international limelight and changing equations on the local and international front. After all, ever since independence, Pakistan has always looked for even slightest opportunity to bring up the Kashmir issue.
