After 20 long years, India will attend the 48th annual Davos summit in Davos, Switzerland. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the plenary session which will be attended by the heads of various countries including Donald Trump. US also has been missing in action in Davos for a while. The last Indian PM to attend Davos was H D Deve Gowda in 1997.
Narendra Modi will be keen to showcase India’s economic potential and especially make the pitch for ‘Make In India’ and ‘Invest India’ at Davos. He is also slated to meet various industry representatives as well as members from World Economic Forum. A lot of people hoping for many center right reforms from this government have been disappointed. Lately reforms like the GST have enthused investors again about the Make in India story.
This outreach to the industry, the government hopes if one were to go by reports, will change the pace of investments in India. One of the biggest economic events in the world will open with Narendra Modi having the inaugural address and Donald Trump doing the closing address on Friday. Whether Make in India and America first clash at Davos, it remains to be seen. But the event will be closely watched by various economic watchers and how this will impact the investments in India will be keenly observed.
Apart from the economic message, the focus will also be on ‘Yoga’ with Yoga teachers also holding sessions. So along with the ‘Make In India’ and ‘Invest India’ message, India will also focus on the soft power. Two decades later, India will be attending again with a hope that the India growth story will get stronger. How this pans remains to be seen, but a fascinating week awaits.
