US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Friday said that the Obama administration should face trial for allegedly using politicised intelligence to wrongly suggest Russian interference in Donald Trump’s 2016 election win, calling it a "treasonous conspiracy" aimed at undermining the election outcome.
In her statement, Gabbard accused then-President Barack Obama and top officials in his administration, including former DNI James Clapper, CIA Director John Brennan, and FBI Director James Comey, of fabricating intelligence to falsely claim that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to support Trump.
"Americans will finally discover the truth about how in 2016 intelligence was politicised and weaponised by the most senior members of the Obama Administration to set the stage for what was really a multi-year coup against President Donald Trump, undermining the will of the American people and our democratic republic," Gabbard asserted in a post on X.
A 114-page report released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence included evidence showing that before the November 2016 election, the Intelligence Community had repeatedly concluded that Russia was "probably not trying to influence the election by using cyber means."
The document also said that a draft of the President’s Daily Brief dated December 8, 2016, clearly stated that Russia "did not influence recent US election outcomes" through any malicious cyber activity targeting election systems.
However, this conclusion was suddenly removed "on the basis of new guidance" and never officially published.
According to Gabbard’s findings, on December 9, 2016, just one day later, President Obama held a National Security Council meeting with Clapper, Brennan, and other senior officials, during which they allegedly instructed the Intelligence Community to create a new assessment claiming Russian interference, despite earlier conclusions that said otherwise.
"The following day (December 9, 2016), senior national security leaders, such as FBI Director James Comey, CIA Director John Brennan and DNI James Clapper, met at the Obama White House to talk about Russia. Obama ordered the IC to produce a new intelligence report that outlined Russian election interference, despite the fact that it would go against several intelligence reports issued during the prior few months," Gabbard declared in her statement.
The report also said that an email from Clapper’s Executive Assistant directed the CIA, FBI, NSA, and DHS to prepare this new narrative "per the President's request."
Gabbard also accused officials from the Obama administration of leaking false stories to major media outlets such as The Washington Post to link the election-related cyberattacks to Russia.
"Obama officials immediately resorted to leaning on their allies in the press to further their lies. Anonymous IC sources leaked classified information to the Washington Post and others that Russia had intervened to hack the election for Trump," her release stated.
Gabbard said that on January 6, 2017, James Clapper released an Intelligence Community Assessment, which she claimed was based on the Steele Dossier, which had already been discredited, and said that the report became the foundation for the Mueller investigation, impeachment proceedings, and a rise in tensions between the US and Russia.
"On January 6, 2017, a new Intelligence Community Assessment was issued, directly contradicting the IC assessments made over the preceding six months. Following months of inquiry into this issue, the facts bring to light that this new assessment was drawn from information that was recognised by those involved as being manufactured i.e. the Steele Dossier is assessed as not credible. This was politicised intelligence used as the premise for innumerable smears attempting to delegitimise President Trump's election, the years-long Mueller investigation, two Congressional impeachments, top-level officials investigated, arrested, and jailed, increased US-Russia tensions, and more," the ODNI statement continued.
She ended her remarks by saying that all those involved must face investigation and prosecution by the Department of Justice.
"Regardless of how influential, each individual who participated in this conspiracy needs to be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law to prevent such things from ever happening again," reported the ODNI, quoting her.
Gabbard also said that all relevant documents have been sent to the Justice Department for possible criminal proceedings.
"The American public's trust and confidence in our democratic republic and thus the future of our country rests on it. Consequently, I am releasing all documents to the Department of Justice to provide the accountability that President Trump, his family, and the American public deserve," she said.
