Farmers have temporarily halted their march to Delhi after Haryana Police used tear gas and water cannons to stop them at the Haryana-Punjab border today. At least 10 farmers were injured in the incident. Later, a group of 101 farmers resumed their march at noon, demanding the government provide a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Bajrang Punia, a wrestler and Congress leader, joined the farmers at the Shambhu border. "On one hand the government is saying that we are not stopping the farmers, but on the other hand, they are using tear gas and other things. It is being treated as if it is the Pakistan border. When leaders go to Delhi to protest, do they take permission?" he said. Since December 6, the protesting farmers have made three attempts to march in the direction of the national capital. On December 6 and 8, security guards in Haryana had previously prevented them from moving forward.
To stop the propagation of false information, the Haryana government halted bulk SMS and mobile internet connections in 12 Ambala villages until December 17 ahead of their scheduled march today. Dangdehri, Lehgarh, Manakpur, Dadiyana, Bari Ghel, Choti Ghel, Lharsa, Kalu Majra, Devi Nagar (Hira Nagar, Naresh Vihar), Saddopur, Sultanpur, and Kakru are among the villages covered by the decree. Security forces in Haryana erected a multi-layered barricade ahead of the scheduled march to stop farmers from marching towards Delhi. Previously, the Ambala police had stated that the farmers could only march to Delhi with the Delhi government's approval.
Farmers have been demonstrating owing to various reasons, including a legal guarantee for the MSP, a farm debt waiver, a farmer's pension and an end to power rate increases. In addition, they are calling for the reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act of 2013 and the removal of police proceedings against farmers as well as "justice" for the victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri riots in 2021. Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on a hunger strike for 19 days at the Khanauri border. The Supreme Court, through Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, has instructed the Centre and Punjab government officials to meet with Mr Dallewal and convince him to end his fast.
