Students Election of Delhi University is presented as an event to judge the mood of electorate for the forthcoming of General Election or Assembly election. The victory of ABVP narrates many stories. ABVP has won president, vice-president and joint secretary's posts while NSUI has won one post of secretary. The ABVP candidates who won the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections celebrated their victory and vowed to fulfil the promises made in their manifesto even as the sole NSUI winner alleged cheating in the results. “Our election manifesto said we would dedicate 50 per cent of the DUSU budget to women safety, so I will now work towards making the campus safer for women,” he said. “Our party has worked for the welfare of students and we will continue to do so,” Mr. Basoya added. ABVP’s Shakti Singh, who won the vice-president’s post, is a national-level boxer. The victory of ABVP narrates two major narratives. One is the different schemes in the educational sector which were being introduced in the last four years by Modi government is well-accepted by the students. There has been an attempt to cleanse the left driven high dose of inimical campus politics. The cultural fabric of India is getting a fine touch with through the education. The second narrative is the educational sector does change in four years. It is a slow process. There are many bad practices which come along in the last 70 years which required to be shed off.
The education itself creates values which spread into social and political landscape. Consequently it builds up of the national fabric. Unfortunately it did not happen. The wells of value based education dried up. It became a source of seeking a luxury lifestyle in the most comfortable zone of the world. The social and parental responsibilities also ran away with this spirit. The sports and music became the anti-dote of education. Perhaps India is the only country where Vidya (knowledge) is adorned with the blessings of Maa Sarswati, which consists of Music and sports as well. When JNU Vice-Chancellor tried to resurrect the lost treasures of indigenous knowledge, he was branded as a killer of the institution. The JNU Teachers Association wrote to HRD Minister that M. Jagadesh Kumar, VC will go down in history for destroying an institution. The course correction has been started from 2014, since the dirt and fungus have many layers, will take time to cleanse and dismantle and recreate. There are many parts which shape the mind-set of the people which are heavily contaminated with the higher education, needs a relook. The alternative perspectives are being debated in different areas including science and social science. The innovative vice chancellor of JNU, Prof M.Jagdesh Kumar has initiated a process of learning from the practices of tribal culture. A science and technology centre for tribal studies will be set up at Jawaharlal Nehru University where the ancient cures for various ailments will be scientifically evaluated. This knowledge could serve to the common people of India. To begin with, research will be conducted in north-eastern states like Tripura where tribals have been using ethnomedicinal plants with anti-fertility properties for birth control. The current scheme of Eklavya Schools in the tribal will boost the status of the tribal people.
The current government is trying to connect the people through education. There are many slippages. One of the issues of Higher education is regional disconnection. Through the scheme of ‘One Bharat Shresth Bharat’ the regional disparity has been addressed. The government is keen to put together the ingenious knowledge system and modern technology. Technology is the biggest driver in improving the quality of education according to HRD Minister Prakash Javdekar. The digital black board is one of the top priorities of the government. The use of technology will upgrade the skills of the teachers as well. There are many other new initiatives which rooted to improve the overall conditions of the education system. 103 New Kendriya Vidyalayas and 62 new Navodaya Vidalayas have been opened during the last four years. The scheme of Ekalavya Model Residential schools will be opened in the tribal areas. It is thought of retaining the identity of tribal people along with modern techniques, their status should be improved.
Under the scheme of ‘ Khelo India’ government is trying to improve the status of games in the villages. The game has been taken a backseat in the modern education system. The overall development of a kid is not possible without a proper set of system of sports is placed. Even Swami Vivekanand said, ‘If I had to advise a 14 year kid to choose between Sports and Geeta reciting, I will advise him to play sports’. One third of problems of the country are concerned with physical weakness of the youth, said Swami Vivekanand.
Despite these praiseworthy initiatives, the higher education is smitten with many ills. The scheme of upgraded autonomy is bound to create further problems in education system. The existing apartheid system in educational system will further deepen. ‘I am a Stephenian, a Jnuite or LSRian’ will create a large chasm. The idea of foreign faculty is another challenge. The major chunk of students is enrolled in government colleges of the different states, their major concern are communications. How does the presence of foreign faculties resolve their problem? There is no dearth of talents within the country. The knowledge in their own languages will be easier to digest. Half of the life and energy is lost from crossing the language boats in India.
Still there is long way to go in plugging the loopholes created in the last 70 years in the education system. The concept of ‘Gurukul’ was categorized as a traditional and closed mindset. Bharat became India and education turned to be a tool to have luxury life style. Value system is whisked away IAS officers started committing suicides. The students set a target to run away from the country at the age 20. The government is trying to convert the brain drain into brain gain through the scheme of Prime Minister Schemes of fellowships. But that is not enough.
A good institution promotes learn to unlearn. There are many ills were incorporated by a particular ideology in the institutions of higher education. For them defaming the nation is a priority, castigating Indian indigenous knowledge system as bullshit. When Prof Jagdesh Kumar is trying to remove the accumulated dirt from JNU, he is branded as a communal. One of the fundamental aims of the education is to identify the core values. The core value of India is world peace and betterment of the humanity. It flows from the cultural heritage of India. Without reinventing the core value, educational institutions will swing from one corner to another in the cat race. Western stocks of knowledge are not end in itself. There is need to connect our kids with Indian heritage of knowledge along with the western tips. Nevertheless, current government is trying to connect the people through the education. The victory of ABVP in the students’ election in Delhi University is a clear message to wider academia that policies which are being run by the current regime is well accepted by the students of India. The vision of PM Modi will make India a much better place and much stronger to resolve many issues of the world with Indian knowledge system.
